Kildare Grants & Bursaries

Kildare County Council is looking for submissions for its 2010 Arts Act Grant Scheme and Bursary Awards.

There is an array of grants and bursaries on offer, including the following which might be of particular interest to our members:

* Drama League of Ireland Summer School Bursary Award

The closing date for all the grants / bursaries is 5pm on Friday the 19th March. Application forms can be downloaded from the web site.

Cork Arts Funds

Cork City Council invites applications for the grants under the Arts Act from groups who contribute to the creative arts or culture of Cork City. Grant is provided to a number of professional arts organisations and community and voluntary groups throughout the city area. These grants provide direct revenue funding for groups in support of their core work.

Cork City Council's Arts and Cultural Development Plan 2006-2009 is available to download from its website. Grant aid is distributed in accordance with these policies and strategies. Arts Grants are allocated to organisations only. Cork City Council offer artist bursary awards to individual artists. Please contact to arts office for further information.

Applications should be made on the official application form, which is available from the Arts Office, Recreation, Amenity and Culture, City Hall. Cork. Application forms are also available from the website and by email from arts@corkcity.ie

Completed application forms, accompanied by the documentation specified on the application form, should be returned to the Arts Office, Recreation, Amenity and Culture, 1st Floor, Abbeycourt House, George's Quay, Cork, not later than 5pm on Friday 5th February 2010.

Kilkenny Arts Act Grants

Kilkenny County Council is looking for applications for its Arts Act Grants 2009.

Any organisation or individual based in the Kilkenny administrative area involved in activities, which promote, develop the knowledge, appreciation and practice of the arts is eligible to apply for the Arts Act Grant.

The Arts includes:
Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Film, Artistic Craftsmanship, Literature, Dance, Photography, and Multi-disciplinary events.

The grant divided into three categories:

1. Groups and Organisations promoting the Arts
2. Equipment Purchasing Grant
3. Individual Artists - all art forms - to enable them to pursue their practice and to develop within their chosen discipline, including Professional Development and the purchase of equipment.

Closing date for receipt of completed applications is no later than 4pm on Wednesday 4th November 2009.

Galway Art Commission

Galway City Council invites artists and arts practitioners of all disciplines to submit proposals for a public art commission to take place in the Carrowbrowne Halting Site, Headford Rd, Galway. The budget for the Carrowbrowne Public Art Commission is €15,000.

The practitioner is asked to respond to the context of the Carrowbrowne site and its community towards the development of a new public arts project that will be informed by the culture and lives of the Traveller Community.

Proposals for any medium of the arts including Drama/Music/Dance/Literature/Sculpture/Visual Arts/Film/Performing Arts are accepted, as are proposals for temporary and engaged projects as well as permanent installations.

Proposals from members of the traveller community professionally involved in the arts are welcome.

Deadline: 4.00pm on Friday 25th September 2009.

Dublin Bursaries

Dublin City Council invites applications from artists who wish to be considered for a Bursary of €4,000 towards studies at an advanced level or the development of work/professional skills.

Artists, resident in Dublin City Council's administrative area, can apply for a Bursary in Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Drama and Literature. One Bursary will be awarded in each discipline.

Galway Film Commission?

The Galway Advertiser reports that in the current tough economic climate some politicians are turning to the Arts to attract investment.

Galway Labour councillor Billy Cameron is urging the Galway City Council to establish a film commission to promote the county as a film location.

"Great film and television drama continues to be made in Ireland year after year," said Cllr Cameron, "but I am convinced we could be losing out due to the fact that we do not have a office under the auspices of the city council."

Cllr Cameron points out that Galway is a "unique centre of culture and creativity" with an office of the Irish Film Board in the city, the Huston School of Film and Digital Media at NUI, Galway, Studio Solas, and the Galway Film Fleadh.

"All of this infrastructure along with the fact that we possess producers, directors, writers, cast and crews in abundance leaves me in no doubt that Galway can become a centre for film making in the west," he said. "A multi agency film commission is pivotal and the cog in the wheel to put Galway on the map for future film making."

DLR Residencies

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council Arts Office in collaboration with the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) is looking for submissions for Writer in Residence at the IADT from October 2009– May 2010.

This year's residency seeks to support writers of contemporary fiction in all genres, with the exception of scriptwriters, whose genre is supported by the Hugh Leonard Award 2009.

Writers are invited to take inspiration from varied sources including the educational context, the innovative research work and the artistic resources.

The IADT will provide a desk and access to a computer within the college but will not provide an office.

The selected writer will be required to live in (or within reasonable commuting distance) to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County, and to IADT.

Residency objectives

To create opportunities for the individual artist to:

• develop his/her own work
• to develop publics for her/his work among the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County community
• engage with the student, academic and broader community as appropriate to the context, the Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County community.
• foster an environment where artmaking and an appreciation of art making can flourish
• To conduct writing workshops with members of the community where appropriate, including a weekly extra-mural workshop located in IADT.

Selection will be made by way of an open submission competition.

Writers will submit an expression of interest together with details of previous work to date as follows:

• A typed curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages)
• Examples of previous work.
• Publications, programmes or published articles, such as reviews
• Typed proposal (maximum 3 pages) for the residency detailing:

1. A plan of work in the context of IADT and of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County, the location of the residency
2. The benefits of the residency to his/her stage of development as a writer
3. The benefits of the residency to his/her current artistic preoccupations including ideas for usage of the resources and facilities
4. Ideas in relation to public engagement with due regard to the community and cultural remit of the Centre for Public Culture Studies amd the School of Business and Humanities, IADT.

• Expression of interest and capacity to address brief
• Artistic merit and originality of work
• Quality of previous work

A short-list of applicants will be invited to an interview on Thursday 6th Aug 2009.

During the interview, the panel will consider the applicants proposal for the residency with reference to:

• Quality of proposal
• Suitability of the proposal to the context of the residency as described by the stakeholders
• Perceived ability to fulfil the requirements of the residency.

The Hugh Leonard Award 2009

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is looking for submissions for The Hugh Leonard Award 2009.

The award is open to mid-career scriptwriters who are residents or citizens of Ireland. The award consists of a bursary of €5,000 and the production of a rehearsed reading of one of the writer's scripts at From the Mountains to the Sea, DLR Literary Festival in September 2009.

A budget of €5,000 will cover the production of the rehearsed reading, which will be managed by DLR Arts with significant input from the selected recipient of the award. The successful applicant will need to be available from the 8th – 12th September for the rehearsed reading.

Selection will be made by way of an open submission competition.

Applicants will submit 3 copies of the following:

• A typed curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages)
• Publications, programmes or published articles
• Typed expression of interest to include
• A short paragraph stating reasons for applying
• A short description of the benefits of the award to his/her stage of development as a scriptwriter
• Details of which script the writer would like to nominate for the rehearsed reading (this can be a new or previously published/performed work)

Interviews may be held in early August for short-listed applicants if deemed necessary by the selection panel.

Fingal Bursaries

Fingal County Council, in partnership with the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, is offering four special bursary awards for professional artists in Fingal.

These awards are offered to enhance the development of four specific arts disciplines:

• visual arts
• writing
• music
• dance

Each award will grant successful applicants the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Monaghan. This centre provides an ideal environment for the development of creative projects and an opportunity to network with other artists.

Criteria:

• The applicant must be an emerging or established artist/writer, poet/musician/dancer or choreographer.
• The applicant must be born or currently resident in Fingal administrative area.

Get LAB Space

Dublin City Council wishes to invite applications for the award of free incubation/workspace at The LAB. The award is intended to enable innovative arts companies/collectives to research and develop new work, over a period of up to six months, through the provision of work/rehearsal space. The space will be allocated to successful applicants on a rotation basis, from May 09 - May 2010.

Previous Awardees have included visual artists groups, multi-media collectives, theatre companies and dance/choreographic collectives.

Applicants should submit work/research proposal; ideal timeframe; anticipated achievements/benefit of use of incubation space; and details of applicants' background to date.

Dublin Film Maker in Residence Selected

Dublin City Council in association with The Arts Council has announced that Joe Lee has been selected as Dublin City Council's Film Maker in Residence.

Joe grew up in Artane, in Dublin 5 in the 1960s and 70s and has lived for the best part of the last thirty years in Marino, Dublin 3.

Joe studied Fine Art at the NCAD and graduated in the early 1980s. On graduation he specialised in film and video making. Through the late 80s and 90s he worked as a freelance director completing projects with Irish, British and German broadcasters. Central to his work from early on is an exploration of the city of Dublin, its multiple identities and the shifting narratives of place.

From the late 1990s onwards he has worked as a film maker on a series arts based projects with Dublin communities. The focus of these projects has been to work with local people to tell stories of local relevance.

"This residency programme will facilitate me to continue to develop an approach to film making that I have been working on since the mid 1990s. That is, to permit story and actuality in the film process to arise out of a dialogue with people about the reality and experience of place... The Irish urban story is still a relatively new phenomenon. This is the first generation to experience a reflection of contemporary Irish urban life in film, music, literature and visual art. What emerges from these reflections of the contemporary is that there is no single way or approach to telling these stories. What I aim to do in my work is to work with people on the basis of mutual trust, in an attempt to find an authentic voice, to articulate or reveal the reality and patterns of life in places that are, for the most part, just a few miles from where I was born" - Joe Lee

Joe has three objectives for the filmmaker residency. The first is to complete The Markets film, which he has been working on for the past year. Footage already filmed includes 13 interviews with local residents. These interviews range from long time street traders, to archaeologists and community activists, to interviews with younger and older people- including John Giles (who grew up in Ormond Square) and the late Tony Gregory, local TD.

The second is to create new work with communities in the South and South West inner city. This work builds on previous work in these areas and will be completed in the second part of 2009.

Thirdly to disseminate his film and video work of Dublin from the last 25 years. In that time he has made and filmed a great deal about and around the city. The Film Maker Residency programme will allow him to explore ways of making his work more accessible to the general public by linking with the Dublin City Council, Archive Unit, Pearse Street Library.

Wexford Awards 09

Wexford County Council's Arts Department is accepting applications from artists resident in County Wexford for the 2009 Artist Bursary Award Scheme.

Six Artform Awards, valued at €5,000 each, are available in for the following disciplines: Dance, Music, Visual Arts, Literature, Drama & Theatre studies, Film.

Wexford City Council is also offering two Education / Training Awards valued at €5,000 each open to artists practicing in any artform.

The deadline for submissions is 5 pm, Thursday, 26th February, 2009.

Kildare Film Bursary

The Kildare County Council has announced its Arts Service Awards and Opportunities 2009.

• Enable formal or informal training : Participation in a professional or post-graduate course, mentoring, or other initiative, which will expand existing practice
